Future FAMU Student Banned from Prom for Pro-Black Poetry

Incoming Florida A&M University student Taiylar Ball was banned from her prom and a decision on her participating in graduation is pending after the 18-year-old performed a poem ‘Dear Black Girl,’ at Chicago’s Homewood Flossmoor High School’s recent talent show.

JET Magazine reports on Ball’s alternative prom, and on the future Biology/Pre-Med major’s reaction to the punishment.

“Prom is like a Cinderella thing,” the Chicago area student said. “You think about it when you’re young, you wait for it and for it to be taken away from you, it’s very hurtful, especially from your school who you love so much.”
